Resident Educator Program Standards
The draft revision of the 2019 Resident Educator Program Standards was completed during the 2018-19 school year by a 14-member writing/workgroup consisting of 11 Resident Educator State Trainers and 3 ODE Resident Educator Program staff members. The Teacher Induction Program Standards (TIPS) published by the New Teacher Center (2018) served as the guiding document for the standards revision process. An analysis of the TIPS and the 2011 Resident Educator Program Standards, a review of the Ohio Strategic Plan for Education Each Child, Our Future (2018), and the Human Capital Leaders in Education (HCLE) Standards revealed gaps in Ohio’s Resident Educator Program Standards. The major revisions of the program standards relate to the following areas identified in the analysis:
- Equity, including culturally responsive practices and mentoring for equity
- Use of formative assessment practices and clarification of formative assessment as it relates to the mentoring process (resident educators) and formative assessment as it relates to instruction (student)
- Program leadership and communication systems. The revised standards broaden program leadership to include school/district leaders, program coordinators and other stakeholders.
- Emphasis on mentor onboarding and continued professional growth for mentors
