Resident Educator Program Mentor Standards

The draft revision of the 2019 Resident Educator Program Mentor Standards was completed during the 2018-19 school year by a 14-member writing/workgroup consisting of 11 Resident Educator State Trainers and 3 ODE Resident Educator Program staff members. The Mentor Practice Standards (MPS) published by the New Teacher Center (2018) served as the guiding document for the standards revision process. An analysis of the MPS and the 2011 Resident Educator Program Mentor Standards, a review of the Ohio Strategic Plan for Education Each Child, Our Future (2018), and the Human Capital Leaders in Education (HCLE) Standards revealed gaps in Ohio’s Resident Educator Program Mentor Standards. The major revisions of the program standards relate to the following areas identified in the analysis:

  • Equity, including culturally responsive practices and mentoring for equity
  • Mentor development as an instructional leader to advance mentoring, the teaching profession, and equitable outcomes for each student
  • Added standards and indicators to address learner variability and culturally responsive pedagogy (tied to principle 1 in Ohio’s Strategic Plan for Education Each Child, Our Future (2018))
  • Greater emphasis on collaboration and partnerships to advance teacher effectiveness (tied to principle 2 in Ohio’s Strategic Plan for Education Each Child, Our Future (2018))
